An Open Letter to My Fellow White People.
How to actually be anti-racist and show up in support of Black lives.
3,279. 3,279 days. 3,279 days have passed since 17 year old Trayvon Martin was shot and killed by a police officer. 3,279 days have passed since the world first started paying attention to the ways in which anti-Black racism has ingrained itself into every aspect of society.
But here we are. 3,279 days later. Black men and women are still at the forefront of racism, discrimination and physical violence — the extent of which was highlighted by the events of this past summer.
I’m not going to sit here and list statistics, detail the deaths and trauma of Black individuals in some desperate attempt at trauma porn. Nor am I going to make some blanket, saviour-like statement about how racism is wrong and everyone deserves to be treated equally. Of course, that is true. But nothing is going to change until white people look past their biases and denial of their comforts. The fight for racial equity requires all of us. We passed the point of “learning and educating ourselves” a long time ago. Now we need to acknowledge our privilege and roles in the upholding of white supremacy. Now, we need to get involved and take action. Now, we need to show up.
